How to Prepare a V60
Aug 19, 2022
Today I'm going to explain how to prepare a V60 . I'm excited about this guide because the V60 always accompanies me in my best coffee moments. I've introduced many people to the world of specialty coffee with the V60. Plus, it's pretty easy to get started with. So if you're up for buying a V60, I hope you'll take note of this guide.
The V60 is ideal for bringing out the best in your specialty coffee, especially for light roasts. To start, we'll use 20 grams of coffee. This amount is ideal for one person. If you want to increase the amount of coffee, you can calculate the amount of water using a ratio of coffee:plain water : 1 g:16 ml. For every gram of coffee, we add 15 ml of water. With 20 grams of coffee, we add 320 ml of water.

To make a V60 we need
- Hario V60 dripper and its jug
- Paper filters
- 20 grams of freshly ground coffee, lightly roasted (medium grind)
- 320 grams of filtered water
How to make the best V60:
-
We place the paper filter in the V60 funnel. First, we run hot water through the filter to wash it and prevent the paper taste in our coffee. We discard this water (this hot water also helps us preheat the carafe).
-
Place the V60 funnel with the filter and carafe on a scale. We weigh it to 20 grams of coffee, which we carefully pour into the filter.
-
We heat the filtered water to 93ºC.
-
Pour in 50 ml of the heated water and let it steep for 20 seconds. You'll see bubbles as the coffee releases oxygen.
-
Slowly pour in the remaining water using a fine stream, swirling it over the coffee grounds. It's advisable to maintain a level of water over the grounds while pouring to avoid unnecessary contact of the coffee with the paper filter.
- Once filtered, we remove the funnel, stir the coffee a few times to mix it well, and serve it.
